Dear Sarah (single)

Dear Sarah is an indie folk breakup letter of a song. Because, well, sometimes it’s okay to write sad songs…

Reviews for Dear Sarah

“Dear Sarah” is a heartfelt folk success, through emotive vocals, climactic acoustics, and piano flourishes. The lyrics plead for Sarah to “see it too,” yearning for a mutual understanding and sense of peace within a relationship that appears to be unraveling. Soaring electric guitar tones linger beautifully into the second half, crafting an atmospheric spell as the vocals re-emerge into the garden setting. The heartfelt folk sound drives to a conclusion with “I can’t say goodbye,” admittances, repeating with captivating impact. “Dear Sarah” captivates in its sincere range of emotion, capturing a middle ground between melancholic reflection and moving forward, while also lamenting on a missed opportunity for connection. The Answer (single)

The Answer, is an indie pop song with nods to Oasis and the Beatles. It blends layers of acoustic guitar, lap steel and synth, alongside an open, anthemic chorus that asks the question: do we sometimes search for meaning, only to find it's been there all along?

Reviews for The Answer

“The Answer” evolves with a tactful, emotive composure. The tender acoustics and vulnerable vocals grow to a twinkling key accompaniment, with the “time rolls on,” vocal remark resonating. Aesthetically, I’m fondly reminded of Suede’s more steadily unfolding efforts, like “Stay Together.” “I would wait a thousand nights for you,” Taro lets out, the yearning playing with genuine appeal into the “searching for an answer,” expansion. Mike Mineo, Obscure Sound

“The Answer fades in gently with sounds of the seaside and a strummed guitar, setting the scene for an Oasis-tinged (Champagne Supernova) style track. A single note on strings adds some extra character before building to the drums and bass joining the song. Taro’s voice, again, impressed us with some superb falsetto, but here he demonstrates another skill in his vocal toolbox: a gritty and powerful rock tone which he brings in just occasionally to emphasise a word or two. This is one versatile vocalist.” Send Me Your Ears

“While singing about the search for an obvious unnoticed meaning, Taro distills vocal lines full of emotion, adhering to light falsettos, where he shows a great influence of Bryan Ferry, eternal 'frontman' of Roxy Music. With its identity and these references, it's impossible for “The Answer” to be bad.” Biro Ramoniko, Music For All blog

Never Had A Love Like This Before (single)

Never Had A Love Like This Before is an indie rock song with a huge side-helping of bluesy guitar. It's about how love can simultaneously feel so right and so wrong. Why do we do it to ourselves, eh?

Reviews for Never Had A Love Like This Before

“Echoes of bands like Rag’n’Bone Man and Royal Blood, combines thudding drums, powerful guitars, and a piercing, emotive vocal.” IIllustrate Magazine

“With thunderous indie-rock arrangements tinged by blues and soul, singer-songwriter David Taro is not one to be pigeon-holed or ignored..” Nicole Mendes, Nexus Music Blog

“Featuring a warm production, intelligently composed lyrics and memorable hook, it is a single that needs to be added to your new music playlist.” FV Music Blog, Hot Picks

Judy (single)

‘Judy’ is an indie pop song that tells a rather mundane day in the life of Judy as she navigates the morning commute, a nondescript job, TV and dinner in her bedroom before lights out. Judy's never had big aspirations because "if you don't have dreams to start with, they can't get broken". Friends from her youth have all had families and drifted away.

And yet, there is a note of defiance too. What if, asks Judy, this is actually how I want to live? What if I'm happy in the reliable, predictable life I've created? Who says I have to find someone to love me? That's why, as the song closes, she turns the lights out and "won't be sorry".

Judy is, first and foremost, a character sketch, but also—in some sub-conscious way at least—autobiographical. I'm definitely one of life's 'Judys'—risk-averse, a little scared of rejection, but also kind of fine about the way life has shaken out.

Musically, the song is built around an acoustic guitar riff in an open G tuning. The piano, which gently echoes the vocal melody, provides a second layer, and then various delicate guitar lines are added as the song progresses. The more distorted guitars that erupt in the bridge act as a release, alongside the defiant lyrics about Judy not having to be like "you get told to be like".

As well as Judy, you can also listen to a couple of other tracks which I've polished up for the occasion: Any Time You Like is a heartfelt lullaby for my son, and Used To Know is a song all about regret.

Reviews for Judy

“From start to finish this song packs a beautiful punch and encourages the listener to ultimately get out there and live their life to the fullest.” Gifted Balance Records, The Study Lounge Blog

“A beautiful and pretty sounding song with a stinger ending and a great, radio friendly length, Judy has all the elements needed for a huge hit that already sounds absolutely timeless. One of our favourites in a long time.” Send Me Your Ears

“Representing the London music scene, David Taro is a singer, songwriter, and multi-talented performer who’s put his signature essence on his latest, ’Judy’. Keeping things genuine in the song’s prowess to tell a compelling story through imagery-filled lyricism, there’s definitely an optimism that comes through by the final notes.” We Write About Music
